Where to Starteverything you need to know about starting PILATES
We are a professional Pilates studio, as such the Pilates sessions we offer may be completely different to what you are used to or what you expect, particularly if you’ve never seen a piece of Pilates apparatus. We appreciate that most people are new to PROPER Pilates and as such the options and booking can appear complex. I hope that this page answers the majority of your questions, but please contact us if you need help!
What is it?
Pilates is a system of exercises using body weight and special apparatus designed to improve stability, strength, stretch and stamina. Pilates is the NEXT LEVEL in training. It empowers you to take your body and to teach it to do things that it couldn’t before. As a result of moving better, your physique changes, your clothes fit better, and you’re stronger and better than before at any level. Unlike traditional gym-based exercise, Pilates is a very sustainable training method.
Who does it?
At IPP our main clientele is ladies over the age of 40. We have some men who join the classes too. Pilates will help with general aches and pains, reduce lower back pain and stiffness, develop your flexibility, and help with other movement restrictions. Pilates will balance your body to become more injury proof, more resilient and stronger than it has ever been before. It suits people who want to develop a movement practice and who will consistently train two to three times per week.

An idea of what Pilates looks like at an intermediate/advanced level – don’t worry, this isn’t where you start 🙂

Our Pilates students are not all skinny-minnies, dancing around in Lycra thongs. In fact, our demographic is forties onwards (as are our teachers), with a focus on women who are taking a look at their bodies and their exercise regimes and deciding that high intensity, high impact is just not what they need and actually isn’t working. Our male clients tend towards their fifties onwards as they too realise that their exercise regime is actually reinforcing their issues, not solving them. Pilates is playful, it’s meant to be fun. It is NOT comfortable, it IS hard work, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a giggle while we’re doing it.
The easiest way to get started is to book and pop in for a free 30 minute consultation. We can discuss your goals and expectations and you can meet us and see the studio to get a better idea of what we are all about. This meeting can also be done via Skype, Facetime or on the phone. Just indicate which you would prefer when you confirm the appointment.
In terms of costs after that, then all new students are required to do private or group intro sessions to begin. After that your teacher will advise on the best route to take. Typically three to five sessions is sufficient to get to the stage where you can join a group. Three x 1:1 intro sessions are £120.00 and three x group intro sessions are £60.00.
IF you have any movement restriction, conditions such as disc problems, shoulder or other joint pain then book a free consult with KELLY to discuss. Pilates can help but you need a specialist teacher.
IF you are fit and healthy and want to get started then either book a free consult to discuss your goals or email [email protected] to discuss/book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Pilates in a studio?
Pilates was never meant to just be done on a Mat. In fact, mat Pilates is actually more difficult than a lot of the equipment. It has been watered down to enable teachers with very limited Pilates qualifications teach in church halls and gyms etc. Pilates in a studio is practiced on all the equipment as designed by Joseph Pilates. It is a system of exercises that are designed to be done in a specific manner. Therefore you cannot do proper Pilates anywhere else BUT a studio.
Where are you?
Why do I have to do Private Sessions first?
Our group classes are limited to five students. This means we can be very hands on and help people progress. It is also very safe. When starting out we require you to do private sessions so that you can learn the order of the exercises, learn how to operate all the equipment safely and so that you can fit into a group without slowing that group down.
How do I start?
How much is it?
Our mat classes start at £7.00 for REStorative Pilates and £7.50 for general mat classes. We do not offer a lot of matwork classes as we incorporate the matwork into the equipment classes (how it was meant to be done). Our equipment classes are limited to five participants and are therefore more expensive. They start at £12.50 if you buy a pack of 20 sessions.
When are you open?
We run classes in the mornings and evenings from Monday to Friday and run workshops and masterclasses at weekends. The studio is not manned all the time, just when we are expecting clients.
Kelly tends to be in the studio Monday, Thursday and Friday day times and some weekends.
Sarah tends to be in the studio Tuesday and Thursday most of the day, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
